The Effect of Symbolic Recognition

The Effect of Symbolic Recognition
Recognition programs that are designed to reward specific behaviors impact how an employee does his or her job. Recipients realize that the people “at the top” are watching and approving his or her effort. Consequently, employees pay closer attention to detail and do their best to stay ahead.

Awards recipients tell us that being recognized helps them to “bond” with the organization and fosters a sense of “belonging.”  Being recognized gives them a feeling of self-worth and purpose.

Symbolic Awards Create a Lifelong Memory
A symbolic award memorializes a recognition event. It embodies the memory of the occasion and acts as a constant reminder of past success. In the case of Ed, above, the crystal bowl was chosen to be a constant reminder of Ed’s hard work. It symbolized his initiative, creativity, and commitment. It also helps Ed seal the memory of the recognition event in his mind.
