2018 Grand Value Champion: Becca Klotz

Hello readers! I’m here to introduce you to our 2018 Grand Value Champion! It’s incredibly important for us to recognize our employees at Crystal D. One way we do this is with our Value Champion program. Each quarter, our employees nominate their coworkers for living out our five core values and a quarterly WOW Champ for each value is selected by managers. At the end of the year, the managers review the nominations of each WOW Champ and ultimately pick the next Value Champion and Grand Value Champion. We recognized a new set of Value Champions (VCs) at WOW Day back in January.

Each of our VCs has been selected as the person who best lived out one of our five core values: integrity, quality, respect, commitment, and passion. Our Grand Value Champion (GVC) is a former VC who has lived out all five values. In addition to the recognition of being a winner, our VCs receive some awesome perks throughout the year including:

  • A shiny crystal award presented to them at WOW Day
  • Their name and picture on the Wall of Champions
  • A reserved parking spot right in front of the building
  • Extra days of PTO throughout the year
  • An afternoon of fun in the sun with Chuck at the boat outing
  • Eight different meals from Let’s Dish!
  • $100 and an afternoon off to go holiday shopping
  • Meetings with managers over breakfast to discuss how Crystal D can improve
  • Help planning company events and community outreach
  • Participating in New Employee Orientation (NEO) as a welcoming committee

That’s a lot of great stuff!

I had the chance to meet with Becca Klotz, our newest Grand Value Champion, to talk about how it felt winning the award and what it’s been like as the GVC.

Becca Klotz and Chuck DahlgrenAlexis: Congratulations, Becca! How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner? Did you think you were going to win?

Becca: Honestly, I was in shock. I didn’t expect to win, and I was taken aback when I heard my name. It’s a hard emotion to describe! I was standing at the time, taking pictures of the past GVCs presenting the winner’s name, so I had to make sure I didn’t drop the camera after they called my name! I was also in tears because it was such an emotional experience. And I swear, since becoming a mom in November, I’ve become an easy crier!

Alexis: How did you feel when you were on stage and during the presentation of your award?

Becca: I really felt appreciated. It’s a humbling experience to know all your hard work and effort doesn’t go unnoticed. I appreciate working with people who take the time to recognize what you’re doing. Being recognized helps you realize that what you’re doing does make a difference. Truthfully, I was still trying to process the fact that I won when I was on stage. It didn’t fully hit me until I was driving home later that WOW…I really won this!

Alexis: What kind of impact do you want to make as a Value Champion?

Becca: This is a hard one to answer. I know I want to make a difference, but I think it will be a team effort. We have a wonderful group of VCs this year, and together, I think we’ll come up with some great ideas on how we can impact the company. I do want to make sure other employees feel appreciated and make sure they know we need every single one of them to help move the company forward. I would love to help them celebrate when they hit goals and nudge them when they need a little push. It would be great to come up with a way to encourage nominations since this is how VCs are selected. I’d also love to hit our community outreach goal this year.

Alexis: What are you looking forward to most now that you are a Value Champion?

Becca: There are quite a few things I enjoy about being a VC, but I can’t really narrow it down to one thing. The perks that come with the title are great, but I also enjoy being able to sit down with the other VCs and learn more about what other departments are doing and how we can help. Plus being able to give our ideas to managers at breakfasts is huge! I believe we’re really considered leaders in the company, and I want to live up to that.

Becca KlotzAlexis: On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being “terrible” and 5 being “totally awesome,” how great is it to have a reserved parking spot?

Becca: Let’s be honest…it’s a five. Parking is so limited, so it’s great to be able to come in and not have to worry about finding a spot or walking from down the street in the snow!

Alexis: OK, we’ve answered the serious questions. Now time for the fun ones. What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Becca: I don’t really have one! I’m not the type of person to go and sing by myself. I need a partner in crime!

Alexis: If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?

Becca: I would love to have the ability to not get tired or have to sleep. I could be up all night and get so much done! Flying would also be awesome. Why worry about driving in the snow or getting stuck in traffic?

Alexis: Is a hot dog a sandwich? Why or why not?

Becca: No, it’s not. But I really don’t have a good reason why. It’s just not a sandwich.

Alexis: Which famous person, dead or alive, would you most like to have dinner with?

Becca: I don’t have one particular person I’d like to have dinner with, but there are a few people I’d like to meet. Maybe I could have a dinner party instead!

Alexis: What’s your favorite cheesy pick-up line?

Becca: I can happily say I’ve never used a pick-up line, and I don’t think I’ve had any used on me either. But there are a lot of funny/stupid ones!

Alexis: If you could make any animal small enough to fit in your pocket, what animal would you constantly carry around?

Becca: Does it have to be just one? Can I just have all the baby woodland creatures? I mean, have you seen hedgehogs and baby foxes and fawns with their wobbly legs? They’re adorable!

Alexis: If a genie granted you three wishes, what would you wish for? “Unlimited wishes” and “unlimited genies” are not allowed!

Becca: First, I would want all the homeless kids and animals to have homes and food. Second, I would want superpowers so I can help more people. And I’d have to think long and hard about my third wish because I can’t just waste my last wish!

Thanks for chatting with me, Becca! And congratulations again on becoming the 2018 Grand Value Champion!
