Indiana Jones

Choosing the Right Award

We all know Indiana Jones. In those movies, he is pursuing a treasure that he considers worthy of the chase. He puts his heart into every aspect of his pursuit. But how would he feel if his efforts were so great but the treasure wasn’t worth it? Luckily for him, he gets an awesome adventure with an equally awesome reward.

Thinking about your workplace, who are the people in your company that are like Indiana Jones? Who are the people always chasing excellence? Who are the people always up for a challenge? Are they receiving their awesome Indiana Jones “treasure” or are they ignored?

You want your employees to put their everything into their work, right? You want the proverbial blood, sweat, and tears. If you want that to continue, you need to recognize your Indiana Jones in an equally extraordinary way. Here are some tips for choosing the right award for your employees:

  • Stay on budget while still blowing them away. Budget is always a factor, and sometimes it can limit your choices. It shouldn’t trump an opportunity to blow your recipient’s minds, so find something astounding that will make them feel like an important part of your company. But how can you do that? You could always increase your budget to get an out-of-this-world award, but if that’s not an option, find the most amazing award that fits in your budget and give them a commemorative video that goes along with it and play some great music to keep everyone pumped up for your awesome award winner. You can always invite their family members to be present for the big presentation, and they could even help present the award. There are plenty of cost-effective yet creative ways to present an award that is still meaningful.
  • Match the award with the effort. Many companies give out monthly/quarterly awards as well as annual awards. Make sure the award is representative of what the event is. An annual award should be bigger, better, shinier. If a monthly or quarterly award is better than an annual award, what incentive do your employees have for aiming for that award that’s supposed to be the best of the best?
  • General versus personal awards. Choose an award that is meaningful to the recipient. If you don’t know your employee well enough to pick one they’ll love, pick an award that aligns with your company’s vision and brand standard. Choosing an award that shows you and your company care about them goes a long way. You’re showing them you care on not only a personal level but also a professional level.

If you can follow these guidelines, you’ll have plenty of Indiana Joneses in your company. They may not be taking on boulders every day, but they should land an artifact worth having.
